On September 29, Peter Bakos came to Room 220 to lead a discussion on politics in the US and elsewhere with students in Levi Littvai' s PSI 2216 US Campaigns and Elections Course, and students from all programs. He contrasted the detached way in which many political consultants and their respective candidates operate—as Bakos notes, more often than not, the consultant tells the candidate, "Just do as I say."—with the passions involved in today' s American politics, as the Republican Party searches for new leaders and finds various means of opposing the initiatives of the Obama administration.
Bakos also noted that, despite the understandable cynicism that comes from the role of financing in American electoral politics, the American system has a saving grace: transparency. He fears for electoral systems where transparency does not exist.
