Course Description
Graphic design is the process and art of combining text and graphics and communicating an effective message in the design of logos, graphics, brochures, newsletters, posters, signs, and any other type of visual communication. This semester begins by exploring in a more structured fashion the fundamentals of visual organization; the building blocks of point/line/plane, and the integration of images with text. You will examine the essentials of letterform and typography.
Furthermore, graphic design program includes digital illustration, which will help you develop electronic illustration skills. Finally, after a unit on three dimensional design, you will work on a practical project to integrate everything you have discovered. Design always exists as an exercise both intellectual and practical. We are guided in practice by accepted principles of legibility and spatial organization, and we are empowered by theory and research. We will use both hand and computer design with Adobe software during the semester.

Honor code
You are expected without question to adhere completely to the McDaniel College academic honor code. Any violation will result in a zero for the given assignment or exam, and other possible sanctions. Your attention is drawn in particular to plagiarism. You are not allowed to copy ideas or use any other designer' s work as your own.
Course policies
Class participation
Informed, critical exchange of ideas forms the core of the university learning experience, and therefore in-class participation must play an important role in the final determination of your course grade. You are expected to share ideas during discussions and you are encouraged to ask questions when you do not understand something.
Crits
After every project I would like to talk honestly about each other' s work. Sometimes it can be hard to be honest, but it can very helpful in your progress. You have the right and the obligation to share your opinions with others. Criticism must be constructive and requires practice.
Absences and tardiness
The student' s grade begins to drop after three absences, a letter grade per absence over the three-absence limit. Appeals for excused absences can only be made to the Director of Academic Affairs. They must be made promptly. For such an appeal, medical certificates, stamped doctor' s notes and other documents are expected.
Students need to show up on time. If you are 15 minutes late, it counts as an absence.
