Professor: Judit Barta
Contact information: jbarta77@gmail.com
Course Description
This course is intended to give you the skills and confidence to approach any academic text, read it efficiently and critically and prepare you for the requirements of the "Introduction into College Writing" course. During this semester, you will learn about the basics of English writing – about note-taking, sentence structure, paragraphs and text cohesion. The core stages of academic writing are planning, drafting, revising, and editing. You will gain a practice in all these stages. Besides you will enhance your vocabulary, and read critically.
We will treat writing as an integral part of reading and discussion. Note that this course is NOT a language course but you are strongly expected to work on your vocabulary and grammar. Depending on need, however, there will be some class time devoted to Grammar review/ practice.
You will be required to
-
actively take part in the lessons
-
do the required reading
-
complete and hand in your written assignments given every week, in printed form or by email
-
write a midterm paper and a final paper
Class participation
During class we will critically look at various written materials and you will be expected to analyze issues; form and communicate your own opinions and ideas. Participation implies attendance; absences will be noted and will adversely affect your final participation grade.
Course policies
You may be absent three times, no questions asked—you need not explain the cause of your absence. Following three unexcused absences, however, you will begin to lose points from your class participation grade, a grade per unexcused absence over the limit. Please note that we meet for two consecutive sessions per week. If you miss them both, that counts as two absences.
